New Research Alert! How Drying & Curing Impact Hemp Quality

Postharvest drying and curing are critical for hemp quality, cannabinoid retention, and microbial safety—but what’s the best approach? 🤔

A recent study from Cornell University explored three drying methods (hot air, ambient air, and freeze drying) and compared curing in glass jars vs. Mylar bags to determine the most effective strategies for hemp processors.

🔬 Key Findings:
✅ Hot air drying (75°C) is the fastest & best for microbial control.
✅ Freeze drying preserves cannabinoids & color but takes longer.
✅ Curing increases moisture balance without degrading cannabinoids.

This week, we’re diving into a groundbreaking study on the best temperature and light intensity combos for boosting medical cannabis yields and cannabinoid production.

Whether you’re a grower or a researcher, these insights are game-changing!

🔬 Key Findings:
✅ High temps (31°C/27°C) lowered cannabinoid yields, but terpenoids stayed stable.
✅ CBD-dominant strains lost 30% of dry matter at high temps, while THC-dominant strains showed resilience.
✅ Higher light intensity (up to 1200 µmol m⁻² s⁻¹) significantly boosted flower production.
✅ A 1% increase in Total Light Integral (TLI) led to 0.95% more flower mass for THC strains and 0.7% for CBD strains.

💡 What This Means for Growers:
🌡 25°C is the sweet spot for max cannabinoid yields.

How Much Magnesium Does Cannabis Need?

This week, @shak_bad dove into the study “How Much Magnesium Does Cannabis Require for Optimal Growth and Function” by Dalit Morad and Nirit Bernstein (Volcani Center & Hebrew University of Jerusalem).

This week, we’re spotlighting a groundbreaking study: “Harvesting Light: The Interrelation of Spectrum, Plant Density, Secondary Metabolites, and Cannabis sativa L. Yield.”

What’s the takeaway?
The study highlights how different red-to-far-red (R:FR) light ratios, plant density, and light distribution impact cannabis yields and secondary metabolite production.

🌟 Key Insights:
1️⃣ A lower R:FR ratio (AP67) boosted dry flower yields by 16%, especially in the last 10 days of flowering.

2️⃣ A higher R:FR ratio (Solray 385) enhanced terpene concentrations by 41%, driven primarily by increased monoterpene synthesis.

3️⃣ Photon conversion efficiency (PCE) was higher with the AP67 spectrum (0.06 g mol⁻¹ vs. 0.05 g mol⁻¹).

💡 For Cultivators:
